I love putting together these photographic posts going back through the year. It was a big season for us. We learned a lot, were more productive, and faced some of our largest challenges yet. It has been a journey getting to this point and I look forward to sharing with you some of the highlights.
In January we had the immense privilege to visit family in southern Ecuador, a place were subsistence farming is the norm. Here you can see Mary next to an oxen pulled plow. Much of the labor is done by humans and animals given the steep slopes of the Andes Mountains.
February and we are back in the greenhouse for spring planting! These early season tasks are made possible through the support of our CSA members to whom we are dearly grateful.
March, Papa Smurf was in the field opening up ground for planting! The cover crops (strips of green) you see in the background grow our soil and make for excellent conditions. We are truly blessed to work this piece of ground and thankful to the landowners who make it available.
April and we are planting! This block of onions and leeks is still being distributed from our cooler and dry storage. You can also see young garlic plants growing through straw mulch on the left side of the picture. Huge thanks to the people laboring to make this work possible.
May and the greenhouse is full! Amazing how all these plants started from seeds only a couple months prior.
June and we are experimenting. In an attempt to build soil, increase yields, and decrease labor we planted several aisles with “cover/cash crops”. Here you can see lettuce growing in a dry land setting between beds of irrigated kale. This crop did not make a marketable yield but did help our soil!
July and crops are growing! This field of peppers produced a bumper crop. Way different than 2023 when we lost this entire crop to hail damage.
August and harvest is in full swing. Here Claudia is showing off cherry tomatoes! Cannot wait for more next year.
September and the garden is full. Shirley and Mile show off radish bunches! A long season led to a very abundant fall full of produce.
October at the Larimer County Farmers Market. We supplement several local restaurants here in town and are so grateful for the support. Here is Chef Brent with 20 pounds of organically grown shishito peppers!
November and we are geared up for winter. This crop of kale is growing under a freshly built high tunnel funded by the NRCS. This grant might have truly saved our farm and has since allowed us to produce food year round.
December marked a time of slowing down and celebrating. A group of farm friends gathered at the house to share a meal and fire. We are so grateful to have this fun loving and quirky community. This photo shows Chris and Ben putting together Winter CSA Shares.
