Coming back to work after a week off has not been easy. In years past, after a little break I often found myself super excited to return to the farm, reinvigorated with new ideas, and fresh perspective. This time, I am feeling a little run down.
It has been sad wrapping up this year. So many things I would have done differently, many lessons learned. Life rarely works out perfectly, but maybe this is just a mind state. No matter how “good” things are we can always look back with hindsight and consider how we would have acted differently.
Agriculture is inherently a profession in partnership with nature. She is the quarterback and the farmers are the rest of the team responding to the plays she decides. Sometimes we run touchdowns, other times we fumble. This past season has been a bit of both. Either way, now in the fourth quarter, I am worn out.
The fields are, too. What was once rows of growing crops now have filled the cooler with food. I am immensely grateful for the bounty the farm has provided.
Thanksgiving is situated perfectly in the season. A reason to come together and celebrate, because life is hard and the simple fact we exist is cause for jubilation. That the sun heats water from the oceans enough to create wind and drop rain on ground thousands of miles away is nothing short of a miracle. Heading into winter I am excited for the celebrations ahead.
