We are welcoming the warm days and nights but that chill in the morning air reminds us seasonal changes are coming. A week from now could look quite a bit different.
I have been astounded by the resilience of plants to rebound from the storm a month ago. What was shredded to stems has grown back two-fold producing beautiful marketable crops.
There is an argument that plants respond well to disturbance. The premiss of regenerative grazing is that by moving animals over pasture, allowing them to graze down plants, then leaving the plants they will regrow stronger. As the ruminants eat the tops, parts of the root mass dies off leaving fodder for soil organisms to consume, thus boosting fertility.
Many plants in the vegetable garden benefit from topping or pruning to promote fruiting. Along these same principles many of our crops have responded with a vengeance from the storm. Cauliflower heads reaching well over 3 pounds are popping up, carrots are sizing up, and beets are getting huge.
It goes to show that through diversity we are resilient. While field tomatoes, peppers, and melons were crushed, many other crops came back better. We are looking forward to finishing this season out with an abundant bang!
