Farm Update 12/10/25
A sigh of relief, the offseason
This kind of farming never ends. We continue to harvest, market, and engage with the farm throughout every month of the year. December does mark a significant slowdown, if you (and the weather) allow it.
This past weekend was a big one as we participated in 3 farmers markets. In preparation we bulk washed roots, now packed and ready for sale. Ample greens were cut ahead of time making this week the first not to include a harvest. The Farm Stand is stocked and running smoothly giving the farmers some downtime.
A few days of intense wind have created some patching to be done on some of our growing structures but nothing to severe. The tractor holding down the eastern door worked well, and it should be calm enough today to cut a new western door. Just a little 5am stress scramble, nothing unheard of.
Attention now shifts to wrapping up this season and looking ahead at the plan for 2026. I like to end the season with a crew wrap-up, picking their brains for where they felt most proud, where the farm can improve, and gather thoughts as we adapt strategies. These are the people dealing directly with our agricultural processes and their input is foundational in improving the business.
It was a different year, as most seem to be. Having a baby during the peak of season put a lot of pressure on our crew and clearly highlights ways we need to improve. My absence for August and September was felt across the farm and I am very impressed they pulled through. Those are always challenging months and still everyone did great.
As we look ahead towards the upcoming season, simplicity strikes a chord. How do we make the farm simpler? Where can we limit steps in taking a crop from seed to sale?
Once the plan takes shape the real challenge of staying disciplined and sticking to the plan takes effect. Not overproducing, not buying equipment because it is a good deal, not overordering supplies are all easy ways to stay in the green.
