Grow. More. Plants. Better. This mantra marks the beginning of the 2023 season. I have used 75% of this mantra over the past 3 years. As we enter our 5th production season I am adding “Better”. If the number of plants grown marked the success of a farm, then 2022 was our most successful year to date. This year we are dialing inward to intensify production stemming from a season of soil building.

Growth is an essential marker to both farming and life. Plants teach us to utilize the resources available and grow where we stand. Growth is a process that comes in waves. Strong roots make it possible to take advantage of the unexpected events life throws our way, transmuting them to better our path. Growth is steady and marked well by flexibility.

More builds. Expanding our capacity through learning, training, failing, and trying again. We show up and return to the parts of our life that need attention, slowly adding to the foundation that holds our potential. Time plays an essential role. Through hours spent we increase our capacity to change and remain fluid to road bumps.

We are in the business of growing plants. However, we all tend the garden of the self. Our minds and spirit require maintenance to flourish. Jealousy, resentment, depression are all weeds that left unchecked can take over our plots and deplete the beautiful parts of ourselves. Mindfulness is the weeding of the garden that allows our best self to grow unimpeded.

The consistency of focus, the boundaries of rest, manifest in growing better. Often I would over plant to accommodate for the eventual losses to weeds, pests, or other factors. I took on extra farms attempting to grow everything under the sun. Now it is clear that each plant in the garden needs attention to maximize our potential. Better means having balance in work and life to remain on the edge of growth without slipping off. A refinement of systems both on the farm and of the self. It also means having a loaded nursery. When a crop is harvested, another follows it. Working in rounds, our goal is to have 2 market crops per bed across most of the farm.
