No more fooling around, it is go time. As we approach June, planting is on the forefront of my mind. Long season crops need to be growing by the summer solstice to have a chance for full maturation. As time ticks by we need to get peppers, tomatoes, melons, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, winter squash, and corn in the ground. These large plantings coincide with the continued successions of greens, root crops, and herbs. Along with the continuous harvesting and weeding of the crops already planted. Bottomline, we are busy.
Right now there are no days off, just hours. Sunlight is reaching towards its solar maximum and with June right around the corner our farm is in the midst of a large push towards abundance. About half our allotted space is currently planted and needs to be filled within the next two weeks.
Thinking ahead we are starting to terminate a cover crop of winter rye. It takes around 3 weeks to go from an established cover crop to final bed preparation. The first step has been mowing and this week we will disc to incorporate the green plant material.
Our first rounds of greens will soon be getting turned under as well. Goodbye hard fought beds of arugula, spicy mix, and radishes. Hello summer crops like buckwheat, beans, sunflowers, sorghum, amaranth and more!
