Thanksgiving Week Update
Let the Holidays Commence!
As the days continue to feel like fall, my eyes squint at the ever-dropping sun sending its warmth to the Southern Hemisphere. Long nights leave our ground covered in frost which quickly melts away under the bluebird days. Cold is coming, but for now we are grateful for the easeful transition of seasons.
Thanksgiving reminds me of the finality of the season. With daylight dipping below 10 hours per day, plants have ceased growing and our high tunnels are more akin to living walk-in coolers. We are harvesting regularly from these structures to keep the fresh produce in supply.
This week the Farm Stand will be open Tuesday and Wednesday to supplement your holiday meals, however we will be closed Thursday and Friday.
I am always surprised at the precipitous decline of sales at our Farm Stand in the winter months compared to the bounty of summer. We have a long way to go to fix the food system, and the wanning customers reminds me that Farm Stands have become more of a treat rather than a staple and steady supply of nutrition. I get it, carrots in the store are cheaper (plus they have toilet paper) and who really has time for the extra stop?
Local produce seems like a novelty item rather than the backbone of people’s diet, at least here. There is clear excitement in addressing this current paradigm and has me thinking of ways to bridge the gap between producer and consumer.
One project I have been super proud to be a part of, and watch blossomed has been the Familiar Foods Truck. This crew brings the positivity and excitement of local produce for customers, combined with a seamless back of house for producers. We are so proud of our fellow contributors who have taken this project from drawing board to pavement.
It was a busy growing season for the Folks here on the farm. A few new hires got trained up and really stepped beautifully into their roles. In total, we (mostly they) attended 53 farmers markets this season and will be continuing to load our truck up weekly until the end of February at the Fort Collins Winter Markets.
As a final hurrah of the market season, we will be attending the Boulder County Winter Farmer’s Market on December 6th and 7th. We look forward to seeing our southern customers and will be bring tons of our famous winter carrots to the event.
I hope you find time to slow down and enjoy a reprieve this November, gathered with people you love sharing local food prepared with care.
I will end this by saying just how thankful I am for all of you. The readers, farmers, customers, crew members, friends, and family in my life. It is an honor to be a part of a community and feel like I know my place in the world.
Thanks Folks!
