Hopefully you didn’t miss us too much last week, Rey and I were on vacation in California! It’s clear why so many people call the Sunshine State home. Spring was in full bloom with flowers and perfect weather.
One highlight was the UC Santa Cruz organic farm. Founded by biodynamic wizard Alan Chadwick back in the 70s the Santa Cruz campus has a robust 30 acre farm. An esteemed grower, we have adapted the Chadwick Cherry Tomato to our high elevation growing systems. The campus is very unique because it offers students a chance to not only learn the details of soil and crop science but also requires hands-on, market garden type work. I have always been a huge advocate for learning by doing and this farm seems to do a great job.
Another farm highlight was visiting City Slicker Farm in West Oakland. This urban farm was established in 2011 right in the industrial heart of Oakland. Many years later they are providing a natural sanctuary in the middle of the city. Chickens, greens, and folks spend time on this unique plot. Consider donating to this crew. They could really use a mobile car jumper to get their tractor running!
The Folks are back at it this week with plenty to do in the nursery and on the farm. Spring is coming and we are gearing up for another great season. Our garlic crop has popped up from a long winter underground and marks some of the first greenery in the field. Look forward to tasty green garlic in the first weeks of our CSA and market season.
We are currently seeking vendors for our Wednesday night market. The markets will be held every Wednesday from May 18-October 26 from 4-7pm. In addition to food vendors we will also feature local food centered food trucks on a rotating basis every week. If you are interested in selling your agricultural products, reach out to us for more information!
